Strategic direction and deployment with a focus on learning and accountability at Kjell & Co

Background

In the competitive landscape of retail, Kjell & Co recognized the need for a cohesive and strategic approach to ensure long-term success and operational execution. To achieve this, the management team embarked on a structured alignment process, integrating SWOT and PESTLE analyses to build a comprehensive understanding of their strategic position, and strategy deployment to have a structure for following up, drive accountability and ensure learning. This process aimed to define the company’s strategic game plan and identify key priorities to achieve their 2027 breakthrough objectives. 

The needs and delivered solution

SWOT and PESTLE analysis: Each management team member conducted a SWOT analysis integrated with a PESTLE analysis to build a detailed “fact-pack.” This provided a robust foundation for understanding the internal and external factors influencing the company’s strategy. 

Workshop for strategic alignment: The management team participated in a workshop to define the strategic “game” Kjell & Co plays and what would make them win by 2027. This collaborative effort resulted in the identification of 10 strategic priorities requiring further investigation. 

3-year strategic plan: This approach defined a clear 3-year strategic direction for Kjell & Co, detailed yearly strategic priorities, and established a structure for deploying and following up on strategic priorities. It emphasized learning from failures and taking accountability to adapt and catch up if falling behind. 

Deep dive teams: Sponsors were appointed to lead deep dive teams, tasked with investigating the potential and business value of each priority. This involved collecting data, determining KPIs, identifying driving and inhibiting forces, calculating costs and benefits, and defining major milestones. 

Prioritization and team formation: Teams were formed to drive improvement targets and reach strategic goals. KPI targets were finalized, data was structured for continuous progress tracking, and detailed action plans were created to deliver on major milestones. 

Strategy deployment methodology: All teams were educated in strategy deployment, focusing on root-cause analysis and counter-measure generation. A business review routine, chaired by the CEO, was established to support teams in learning from execution and adapting plans when targets were missed. 

By addressing these needs, Kjell & Co aimed to create a well-aligned strategy deployment and performance management structure capable of driving the company’s strategic vision forward. This comprehensive approach ensured that the company would be well-positioned to achieve its long-term and short-term objectives and thrive in a competitive market.
