Shaping the future of Malmoe Museum of Art through creative collaboration
Company: Malmoe Museum of Art
Background
In the dynamic and ever-evolving world of museums, it is crucial to foster a vision that resonates with both the institution’s internal team and its diverse audience of visitors. To achieve this, the museum embarked on a journey to develop a deeply anchored vision, long-term objectives and operational yearly plans. This journey involved understanding the needs and perspectives of the museum’s visitors, enhancing the work environment, and fostering effective team communication and creative collaboration.
The needs and delivered solution
Understanding visitors’ perspectives
Inside-out and outside-in approach: Employees needed to gain a holistic understanding of the museum’s visitors, both from an internal perspective (inside-out) and by stepping into the visitors’ shoes (outside-in). This dual approach ensures that the vision is relevant and engaging for all stakeholders.
Work environment enhancement
Group development and team communication: To create a supportive and collaborative work environment, the team was educated in group development and effective team communication. This education aimed to foster a culture of collaboration and mutual respect.
Cultural transformation
Behavioral changes: The group identified behaviors to start and stop doing to nudge the organisational culture in the right direction. This step was essential for aligning the team’s actions with the desired cultural shift.
Vision and long-term objectives
Creative visioning process: Employees engaged in a creative process to envision the museum’s future, considering both operational and work environment perspectives. They used insights from renowned art institutions to inform their vision and set long-term objectives.
Autonomous engagement
Defining focus areas: In an autonomous and open process, employees defined yearly projects and actions to achieve the vision. This approach encouraged true engagement and ownership of the museum’s future direction.
Mutual expectations and collaboration
Defining responsibilities and synergies: The group defined areas of responsibility, synergies, and cross-functional projects that required collaboration beyond the norm. They connected work values to real situations, fostering transparent and honest dialogue.
Individual and collective goals
Goal setting: Through collaborative discussions, employees defined individual goals for both their projects and personal development. This step ensured that everyone had a clear understanding of their role in achieving the museum’s vision.

By addressing these needs, the museum aimed to create a vision that was not only deeply anchored and long-term but also engaging and relevant to both its employees and visitors. This approach ensured that the museum’s future would be shaped by a collaborative and creative process, leading to a thriving and dynamic institution.
